FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
General E-Bike Questions
At Bluejay, we've transitioned to rear hub motors across our lineup for a smoother, simpler riding experience. Here's how they differ:
- Rear Hub Motor (Bluejay Current Standard):
- Positioned in the rear wheel hub
- Delivers a smooth, push-like assist from behind
- Requires less maintenance
- Great for flat to moderately hilly terrain
- Mid-Drive Motor (Previously Used):
- Mounted at the bike's crank (center of the frame)
- Feels more natural and balanced while pedaling
- Offers better performance on steep hills
- Higher maintenance and generally more expensive
Rear hub motors keep things simple, quiet, and reliable—perfect for everyday riders looking for a low-maintenance electric boost.

Weight Capacity
- Premiere Lite: 275 lbs max
- Bluejay Sport: 275 lbs max
- Bluejay WILD: 154 lbs max
- Bluejay Sport and Premiere Lite Rear Rack: 55 lbs
- Optional Front Basket: 20–24 lbs (model-dependent)
- Note: Rear baskets require a rear rack to be installed. If your bike does not include a rack, you will need to add one before attaching a rear basket.
The actual rear rack hardware is the same size across all bikes. However, the appearance and fit will vary depending on the frame size of the bike it is mounted on. A rack installed on a Large frame will appear longer due to the overall geometry of the bike. If your bike is a Small frame, the rack will look more compact even though the dimensions are identical.
Battery & Charging
While we don’t sell chargers directly on our website, we do keep replacement chargers in stock. Please email us at support@bluejaybikes.com and we’ll help you get the correct charger for your bike.
- Premiere Lite: Up to 50 miles per charge, depending on riding style, terrain, and assist level.
- Bluejay Sport: Up to 75 miles per charge, depending on riding style, terrain, and assist level.
- Bluejay WILD: Up to 45 miles per charge, depending on riding style, terrain, and assist level.
4–5 hours for a full charge using the included Bluejay charger.
We recommend charging after every ride to preserve battery health and ensure full power when needed.
At low charge (under 30%), the bike may limit assist to conserve power. Always start your ride with a fully charged battery.
Hills, Speed & Motor Performance
Yes! Bluejay bikes are pedal-assist (Class 1 or 3), meaning the motor supports your pedaling effort.
- Premier Lite: Up to 20 MPH (Class 1)
- Bluejay Sport: Up to 28 MPH (Class 3)
- Bluejay WILD: Small: up to 12 MPH, Medium: up to 15 MPH, Large: up to 20 MPH (Class 1)
Extremely well. Our motors and gears are optimized for climbing hills. Adjust the pedal assist level for an effortless uphill boost.
Care & Maintenance
Pre-Ride Safety Checklist: Before each ride, inspect your bike thoroughly using this checklist. If you're unsure about anything, consult a qualified electric bike mechanic:
- Front Wheel Quick Release: Ensure the lever is tight. If it opens too easily, tighten the nut on the opposite side, then close firmly. Video Tutorial
- Brakes – Squeeze each brake lever individually while walking the bike to ensure it stops smoothly. Levers should feel firm.
- Wheels and Tires – Check for good tread, no damage or bulges. Wheels should spin straight, and spokes should be tight.
- Steering – Handlebars and stem should be properly aligned and securely tightened. Movement should feel smooth.
- Chain – Ensure it’s clean, lubricated, and moves smoothly. Extra care needed in wet or dusty conditions.
- Cranks and Pedals – Pedals must be tightly secured. Cranks should be firmly connected and not bent.
- Battery – Charge fully before use and lock securely into the frame. Do not charge in wet environments.
- Electrical Cables – Ensure all connections are clean, dry, and fully seated. Confirm that the lights work and are unobstructed.
- Accessories & Gear – Make sure all reflectors, racks, and accessories are secure. Wear a helmet and any required safety gear.
- Front Wheel Quick Release: Ensure the lever is tight. If it opens too easily, tighten the nut on the opposite side, then close firmly. Video Tutorial
- Wiggle Check: While standing over the bike, hold both brakes and rock the bike. If there’s play, recheck the quick release and stem tightness.
- Check Stem Tightness: Confirm the four bolts on the faceplate are tight and the top bolt is snug with the handlebars aligned to the front wheel.
- Powering On: Hold the power button at the top of the screen. The bike starts at Assist Level 1.
- Adjusting Assist: Tap the top of the screen to increase, bottom to decrease. Numbers indicate your current level.
- Turning Lights On/Off: Hold the top-left corner of the screen for 3–5 seconds. Lights auto-activate in the dark.
- Walk Mode: Set assist to 0, tap again to reveal the walk mode icon, then hold the bottom of the screen to activate.
- Shifting Gears: Use the gear shifter on the right handlebar. Top lever = easier pedaling. Bottom = harder pedaling. Shift while in motion for best results.
Most riders find gears 4 and 5 ideal for cruising.
Make it a habit to run through this checklist before every ride to keep your Bluejay safe, reliable, and fun. Questions? We’re here to help: support@bluejaybikes.com
Yes, you can ride in light rain. But avoid heavy downpours, puddles, and submerging your bike.
After wet rides:
- Dry thoroughly
- Apply anti-rust treatment to the chain
- Never transport or store your bike in the rain
Troubleshooting & Operation
To adjust the angle of the quill stem, be sure to loosen the bolt underneath the stem—not the bolts on either side of the stem. The side bolts secure the handlebars, but do not control the stem angle.
Note for Bluejay WILD displays: If the display on your Bluejay WILD bike is not clicking or responding properly, it may be due to the mounting bolt under the screen being too tight. Try loosening the bolt slightly to allow for normal operation.
Yes. All Bluejay models come equipped with powerful hydraulic disc brakes. This high-end braking system offers excellent stopping power in all conditions, making every ride safer—especially when riding at higher speeds or downhill.
- Check wire connections.
- Reverse polarity if needed.
- Ensure clips are fully inserted.
- If unresolved, contact Bluejay support.
- Ensure the bike is fully stopped when powering on.
- Check battery seating and charge.
- Make sure all cables are securely connected.
- Turn on: Press and hold the power button.
- Use "+" or "–" to adjust pedal assist (1–5 levels).
- Display shows: speed, assist level, battery life, range.
