Pre-Ride Safety Checklist

Posted by Bluejay Electric Bicycles on

Welcome to the Bluejay family! Follow this guide to get your bike ready for the road and to ensure a safe, smooth ride every time.

Pre-Ride Safety Inspection

Before each ride, inspect your bike thoroughly. If you’re unsure about anything, consult a qualified electric bike mechanic.

1. Front Wheel Quick-Release

  • Before every ride, ensure the quick-release lever on the front wheel is securely fastened.

  • Pull the lever—if it opens easily, tighten the nut on the opposite side, then close the lever firmly.

2. Brakes

  • Squeeze each brake lever individually while walking the bike to ensure it stops smoothly.

  • Levers should feel firm, not spongy.

3. Wheels and Tires

  • Check that tires have good tread, no bulges, and no damage.

  • Wheels should spin true (no wobbles or dents).

  • Spokes should be tight and intact.

4. Steering

  • Handlebars and stem should be properly aligned and securely tightened.

  • Make sure the steering feels smooth and responsive.

5. Chain

  • The chain should be clean, properly lubricated, and move smoothly.

  • Maintain frequently in wet, salty, or dusty environments.

6. Cranks and Pedals

  • Pedals must be securely tightened.

  • Cranks should be firm, not bent, and securely connected.

7. Battery

  • Charge the battery fully before use.

  • Lock it securely into the frame using the key.

  • Avoid charging in wet or damp environments.

8. Electrical Cables

  • Make sure all connectors are fully seated, clean, and dry.

  • Inspect for any damage.

  • Check that the headlight and taillight are unobstructed and functional.

9. Accessories & Gear

  • Check that reflectors, racks, and all fittings are secure.

  • Always wear a helmet and any other required safety gear.

Initial Setup Before Your First Ride

Front Wheel Quick Release

  • Verify that the quick-release lever is securely in place.

  • Pull the lever—if it opens easily, tighten the nut on the opposite side, then close the lever firmly.

  • How To: Remove the Front Wheel

Wiggle Check

  • Stand over the bike (without sitting).

  • Hold both brake levers and rock the bike back and forth.

  • If you feel any play, re-check the quick release and then check the stem.

Check Stem Tightness

  • Ensure the four bolts on the faceplate are tight.

  • Tighten the top black bolt and confirm the handlebars are aligned with the front wheel.

Getting to Know the Controls

Powering On

  • Hold the power button at the top of the screen to turn the bike on.

  • The bike will start at Assist Level 1.

Adjusting Pedal Assist

  • Tap the top of the screen to increase the assist level.

  • Tap the bottom of the screen to decrease the assist level.

  • Numbers at the bottom of the screen show your current level.

Turning Lights On/Off

  • Hold the top left corner of the screen for 3–5 seconds to turn lights on/off.

  • Lights turn on automatically in the dark.

Using Walk Mode

  • Set assist to 0.

  • Press down once more to reveal walk mode icon.

  • Hold the bottom of the screen to engage walk mode.

  • Release to stop walk mode.

Shifting Gears

  • On the right handlebar, you’ll find the gear shifter.

  • There are two levers:

    • The top lever lowers the gear (easier to pedal).

    • The bottom/back lever raises the gear (harder to pedal).

  • Always shift gears while riding for smooth transitions.

  • Most riders find gears 4 and 5 to be the most comfortable for cruising.
